Yet to be revealed, but a 170-hp 2.0-liter turbo looks a strong contender as the Miata's new powerplant.

There’s still no official word on what will power the all-new Mazda MX-5, but thanks to Autoweek we have some lovely shots of what’s under the hood of the popular roadster. So, what do they tell us? For starters, we can see the battery is positioned near the grille, there’s a four-point strut brace with the engine pushed well back into the bay. One of the images clearly shows a Skyactiv inline four-cylinder. As for displacement, it will almost certainly be either the 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter unit found in the Mazda3 and CX-5

 The new MX-5 could well boast an output somewhere in the middle of these two, so in the region of 155-184 hp and 154-185 lb-ft of torque. There’s no evidence of a turbocharger, although this is strongly tipped to feature in one of the powerplants. We’d guess at the new Miata receiving a 2.0-liter turbo with around 170 hp which, coupled with the 220-pound drop in weight, will make for a very tasty package
